Buttermilk Ponies overlooking Streamstown Bay

The Connemara Pony is the only native pony to Ireland.Their characteristics are : good temperament, hardiness, staying power, intelligence, soundness, surefootedness, jumping ability, suitable for child or adult.

In older times they were used to pull carts, for farm work and as the family transport.

Nowadays they are mainly kept as pets and show animals. Each Sunday from May until October there is a show held within a 2 hour drive of Clifden, if you are interested in attending a show just let us know, we’ll give you directions and probaly see you there!

On our land in Streamstown and Moyard we breed Connemara Ponies and Connemara Blackface Sheep. Guests are welcome to visit, we’ll give you directions and you can also meet Toby our sheepdog, and Harley our Golden Retriever if you wish. There is a ringfort located at the top of our land in Streamstown and from there you will get the most amazing views of Streamstown Bay, the deserted village and standing stones on the neighbouring land (it’s well worth the climb!)  From our mountain land you can see all the way to Inishbofin Island on a clear day. In Moyard you will often see the roaming wild deer.

Our Ponies are Buttermilk Melody ( Millie), who has a filly foal at foot by Dooneen Supermatch, as she was born May First and gave us a bit of a scare we have named her Buttermilk Mayday ( May for short!) .Buttermilk Diana (Diana) has a filly foal ( awaiting name !) at foot  by the Earl of Newbridge born on April 6th. Anala Tuairin ( Jasmin) is scanned in foal for 2011. Our two year old filly Ruby, was born to Diana May 25 2008, by The Earl of Newbridge, a full sister to this year’s foal,  and is showing Hoku, our yearling filly out of Millie by Dooneen Supermatch, the ropes !.

The Connemara Pony Breeders Society was established in 1923. It’s offices are in the Showgrounds in Clifden town. From there you will get any information you may require regarding breeding etc. They also stock a variety of books and merchandise on the Connemara Pony.

Connemara Pony Sales hold a one day sale in February, and March, a two day sale in May and August and a five day sale in October, at Clifden Mart on the Galway Road, this is a great opportunity to see a large number of animals at close proximity and perhaps make a purchase.
